This set is for four. When a fifth shows up, you pull a dinner plate from the set you keep for the next night, and it does not match. The Milkyway glaze is dark enough that the mismatch blends in the candlelight, but you notice. It is a good problem to have.

The pieces are dense stoneware, heavy in the hand the way fired clay ought to be. They stack two high without wobbling; any more and the unglazed foot ring marks the plate below. The dishwasher cycle leaves the surface clean. It chips at the rim if you drop it, and the pale clay shows. That is the trade-off for material that holds heat and does not absorb.
