The Smoky glaze settles deepest in the bowl’s well, a solid dark. At the rim the clay shows through, lighter, marking the edge. The surface is not painted on; it is the clay itself, fired until the two become one.

Four bowls, each 8.25 inches across and holding 12 ounces, sit on the table for a pasta dinner or a morning coffee. The stoneware is heavy, solid, and it does not absorb. The glaze is dishwasher and microwave safe, and the pack says it will not change. The rim is the one place to watch: a knock leaves a pale chip.
