For six people. When a seventh turns up, you hand them a plate and a bowl and tell them to share with a friend. The bowl is wide and shallow, built for a heap of pasta or a dinner salad that stretches to two. The plate is the right size for bread or a side. The set is two bowls and two plates, so you buy two sets for six.

Stack two bowls high, two plates high, and you can fit a service for six in one cabinet shelf. The stoneware is heavy and dense, so it stays put on the table. The foot ring is left unglazed, so it grips the table and does not slide. The rim is the most vulnerable part. A knock there leaves a pale chip.
