Pick up a 10-inch dinner plate by the rim. It has a weight that comes from dense-fired stoneware, a solid heft that tells you this thing is not going to flex or warp. That weight is why a full plate sits steady in one hand while you serve the table without a wobble.

What the weight asks of you: stacking these plates more than two high invites marks from the unglazed foot ring of the plate above onto the one below. And like any stoneware, the rim will chip on a hard knock the glaze cannot save. A small trade-off for plates that are safe in the microwave and dishwasher.
